A few weeks ago, Lisa,
one of my Ryerson students, wrote a great essay for class about how scared she was of getting needles, and how a psychiatrist helped her overcome that fear. The class and I suggested some edits, and then I said, send it to Facts and Arguments at the "Globe." She did the edits, she sent the piece, it was accepted a few days ago and ran in the paper today.
Not only that, but John Tory called to ask her if she'd speak on the topic on his radio program this evening. I just heard the interview. Lisa was wonderfully relaxed, and Tory told her how grateful he was that she'd written with such honesty and openness about a problem many people share.
Hooray! The power of the personal essay! Brava, Lisa.
